This level of protest has not been witnessed since the beginning of the revolution in 2011. In a region controlled by the regime, the inhabitants of Sweida have bravely defied danger and repression by attacking the symbols of power, tearing down portraits of the Assads and ransacking offices of the Baath party.

The ongoing deterioration of living conditions has shattered the barriers to protest.

Southern Syria played a pivotal role in the initial stages of the 2011 revolution. This region also holds historical significance as the heart of the Druze community and the epicenter of the “Great Syrian Revolt” that took place between 1925 and 1927 against the French colonial rule.
