The Foreign Ministers of Syria and Turkey will meet on Wednesday in Moscow, for the first time in over a decade.

Foreign ministers of Turkey and Syria would hold on Wednesday their first official meeting since the start of the Syrian civil war, more than a decade ago, officials said.

The meeting, that will take place in Moscow, will also involve the foreign ministers of Iran and Russia, as confirmed by the Turkish Foreign Ministry.

This announcement is a diplomatic boost for President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, just days before the upcoming general election.

Turkey previously supported rebel efforts to remove Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and had a military presence in the war-torn country.

However, Erdoğan has since changed course, seeking reconciliation with Syria. Erdoğan’s opponents support this shift, which is an essential aspect of his election campaign.

Both sides expected to discuss normalizing relations, humanitarian issues, and the safe repatriation of Syrian refugees.

Iran and Russia are helping to mediate the talks.
