Despite the tragedy currently afflicting the Palestinians in Gaza, with all its attendant consequences, particularly in Lebanon, the annual marathon continues uninhibited by the challenges that have befallen the region. This year, however, there is a notable absence: no Palestinians from the Autonomous Territories or Jordan will be taking to the starting line, which represents a break with the presence observed in previous editions.
Despite this void, the marathon retains its symbolic significance thanks to the inclusion of 200 Palestinian children ready to lace up their running shoes this Sunday. Hailing from the Palestinian camps in Lebanon, these young athletes will be running not only to win personal victories, but also to express their solidarity with their compatriots in Gaza.
The Beirut Marathon, traditionally a melting pot of diverse talents, sees the arrival of accomplished runners from Ethiopia and Kenya, with the promise of more from Iraq, Jordan, Egypt and Sudan in the coming days. However, the participation of Palestinian runners remains uncertain, casting a shadow of ambiguity over the representation of this conflict-torn region.
