Caretaker Minister of Public Works and Transport Ali Hamiye held a meeting on Monday to expedite the clearance of goods from the port and airport, particularly those related to citizens’ daily needs.
He emphasized the importance of cooperation between all agencies operating in Lebanese maritime and air facilities.
Among the attendees were customs officials, the Director General of Civil Aviation, Fadi Al-Hassan, the Director of the Port of Tripoli, Ahmed Tamer, the Director of the Port of Beirut, Omar Itani, representatives of airfreight companies, and the President of the Syndicate of Food Importers, Hani Bohsali.
At the end of the meeting, Hamiye emphasized that joint efforts between public and private sector stakeholders were “heading in the right direction.”
Regarding the suspension of certain airlines operating in Lebanon, Hamiye clarified, “It was the airlines that suspended their flights to Beirut, not the Lebanese government.”
Bohsali, for his part, expressed concern over the need to speed up the process of clearing goods from ports.
He called for “exceptional measures for clearing goods through customs, given the exceptional conditions we are experiencing.”
He also highlighted the importance of auditing all goods in ports to prevent the entry of contraband and illegal goods, urging full coordination between the relevant ministries and the Presidency of the Council of Ministers.
