The United Nations Security Council unanimously voted on Wednesday to extend the UNIFIL’s mandate (UN Interim Forces in Lebanon), a long-running peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, for another year.

Established in 1978, the mission patrols Lebanon’s southern border with Israel. The mandate for the operation is renewed annually, and its current authorization was due to expire on Saturday.
The vote came just days after Hezbollah and the Israeli military engaged in one of the most intense exchanges of fire between them.
Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati reaffirmed Lebanon’s commitment to implementing Resolution 1701 after the Security Council’s decision.
