Metropolitan Archbishop of Beirut Elias Audi wondered about the identity of those who obstruct the election of a President “since everyone claims to facilitate the electoral process and calls for the vote to happen.”

“If all the MPs are convinced of holding the election, then why don’t they head to Parliament and elect a President as stated in the Constitution, without conditions and counter-conditions, and without interpreting the text according to their interests?” he asked.

In his sermon, Audi highlighted that electing a President is “not only a Christian necessity but a national obligation,” therefore “all parliamentary blocs must participate in the election.”

He reiterated that “we do not need new customs,” demanding that the Constitution be respected and applied without letting anyone mess with the fate of the country, nullify its role, or undermine its democratic foundations.

“What is required is not slogans but the will to work and the sincerity of intention,” he said, adding, “Those who claim constitutional sterility, are sterile in thinking, because Lebanon witnessed periods of prosperity and brilliance under this Constitution, led by great statesmen.”

Archbishop Elias Audi finally emphasized that “restructuring constitutional authorities and building institutions are essential prerequisites for any rescue operation.”
