Lebanon’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations has called on the Security Council “to compel Israel to cease its aggression and violations of Lebanese sovereignty” and “to enter into negotiations through the UN to comply fully with Resolution 1701 and thus preserve peace and security in the region.”
A statement issued on Wednesday read that in accordance with directives from the Lebanese Foreign Ministry and in response to threats made by Israel’s representative at the UN concerning “Israel’s intention to implement Resolution 1701 by force in the coming weeks,” the Lebanese Mission to the UN in New York reacted by asserting that “it is Israel that is violating Security Council Resolution 1701.”
Justifying these accusations against Israel, the Lebanese delegation maintains, “Israel’s land, sea and air violations have been documented by the Security Council since 2006, exceeding 30,000 violations, in addition to daily attacks on villages in South Lebanon which have led to the deaths of dozens of civilians and the displacement of tens of thousands of citizens from their villages, as a result of targeted bombardments, daily raids and the use of offensive drones.”
The statement also reiterated Lebanon’s position in favor of peace. It said that Lebanon “has repeated on several occasions, through the intermediary of senior officials, that it has never wanted war and that it does not seek it now or in the future.”
