An Opposition MP described the alliance between the Free Patriotic Movement and Hezbollah as one purely based on necessity and interest, even though it is often weakened when important deadlines approach. “Hezbollah puts its interests ahead of those of its ally,” he said.
A Lebanese Forces MP also described this alliance as “a marriage of necessity subject to Hezbollah’s conditions.”
A person close to Gebran Bassil explained that the latter faces a Cornelian dilemma: “He is unable to remain in this alliance, but he is also unable to leave it for fear of finding himself alone and without any allies.”
This is hardly surprising, given that the son-in-law of the former President of the Republic has alienated the entire political class, starting with his main allies, Hezbollah, and the Amal movement.
