The Saydet el-Jabal Gathering declared on Monday that “Lebanon’s salvation increasingly depends on the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions 1559, 1680 and 1701.”
Resolution 1701 brought an end to the war between Israel and Lebanon in 2006. Resolutions 1559 and 1680, adopted in 2004 and 2006 respectively, call for “the disarmament of all armed groups in Lebanon. This is aligned with the Lebanese government’s decision of July 27, 2006, which grants exclusive authority to hold arms and exercise power in Lebanon to the Lebanese state.”
According to Saydet el-Jabal, calls for the full implementation of resolution 1701 south of the Litani, which would push Hezbollah back north of the Litani, “worry certain parties,” who believe that “this would cause a barter between Israel’s security and Hezbollah’s greater hold on political power in Lebanon.”
“This is why we consistently advocate for the implementation of (resolution) 1559,” according to the statement issued by Saydet el-Jabal following its weekly meeting.
“The Lebanese and international legalities are inseparable,” insists the Gathering. It is unacceptable that the south of the Litani falls under the umbrella of international legality, while the north of the Litani falls under that of Teheran.”
Asserting that Hezbollah is an Iranian faction responsible for Iran’s occupation of Lebanon, Saydet el-Jabal argued that “MPs must ask Hezbollah to return its weapons to the Lebanese state, under the application of resolutions 1559 and 1701.”
If they fail to do so, “Saydet el-Jabal will assure that the MPs, the Speaker of Parliament and the caretaker Prime Minister assume responsibility for the casualties and destruction that will befall Lebanon as a result of Hezbollah’s Iranian policy following the Gaza war.”
“The Lebanese people reject war and occupation and will always fight for Lebanon’s independence, freedom and sovereignty,” concluded Saydet el-Jabal.
