Lebanon’s Caretaker Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Abdullah Bou Habib, has asked the Lebanese mission to the United Nations to submit a new complaint to the Security Council.
This complaint comes in response to the recent targeting of the Lebanese Army, resulting in the tragic loss of a soldier’s life and the injury of several military personnel. Additionally, Bou Habib cited responses to communications from the Israeli representative to the United Nations addressed to the Security Council.
The complaint highlights the incident where Israel targeted a Lebanese Army center in the Odaisseh area, causing the death of a soldier and injuring three others who were subsequently transported to the hospital for medical treatment.
Emphasizing Lebanon’s firm commitment to upholding international law and respecting decisions made by the Security Council, Bou Habib expressed concerns about Israel’s continuous violations of Lebanon’s sovereignty. The country has been subject to attacks by land, sea, and air, with Israel consistently avoiding compliance with international resolutions, notably Resolution 425.
Resolution 1701, issued by the Security Council in 2006, aimed to achieve a permanent ceasefire. However, Israel’s actions have undermined this objective through daily assaults on Lebanon’s sovereignty via various means, including land, sea, and air attacks, along with efforts to solidify its occupation by annexing Lebanese territories.
Israeli airstrikes have resulted in a significant number of casualties and injuries among civilians, including journalists, paramedics, and children. The aftermath has led to the displacement of over thirty thousand Lebanese citizens from their homes. Furthermore, Israel’s deployment of internationally prohibited white phosphorus shells in civilian areas has caused substantial environmental and material damage. The use of Lebanese airspace for attacks has also raised concerns about the safety of civil aviation and the infringement on the sovereignty of a neighboring state.
Lebanon reiterated its commitment to the full implementation of Resolution 1701 and called for Israel’s adherence to these terms, which, to date, has not been fully realized. The nation underscored its dedication to de-escalation and the restoration of calm along the Blue Line, condemning the targeting of UNIFIL headquarters and personnel.
