The anti-Hezbollah Saydet el-Jabal Gathering declared on Monday that “Lebanon does not want to be dragged into another war dictated by others,” in reference to Hezbollah, who opened the southern front against Israel on October 8 in the wake of Hamas’ attack.
A statement issued by the Gathering at the end of its weekly meeting said that Hezbollah should make a choice: either return to the Lebanese fold, on Lebanese “terms,” i.e. “comply with the provisions of the Constitution and international resolutions, notably UN Security Council resolutions 1559, 1701 and 1680;” or “remain Iran’s proxy until the latter drops it at the first real danger” as it did with Hamas.
Resolution 1701 put an end to Israel’s war against Lebanon in 2006. As for Resolutions 1559 and 1680, adopted respectively in 2004 and 2006, they provide for “the disarmament of all non-state armed groups in Lebanon in accordance with the Lebanese government’s decision of July 27, 2006.”
Under the resolution, “only the Lebanese state is authorized to hold arms and exercise its authority in Lebanon.”
Stressing that Lebanon’s liberation from Iranian occupation is as important as its liberation from “Syrian and Israeli” occupation, Saydet el-Jabal called on sovereign anti-Hezbollah political parties and members of parliament to “raise the issue of Hezbollah’s arms and those of all Palestinian factions.”
“Not only are these conditions in line with the provisions of the Constitution, the Taif Agreement and international resolutions, but because it is the main condition for Lebanon to win back its sovereignty and to pull the country out of financial and economic collapse,” the statement said.
