Sheikh Nabil Kaouk, member of Hezbollah’s executive council, made strong statements against the sovereignist camp, asserting that “the parties adopting a defiant and confrontational attitude” towards the presidential election have become “a burden to Lebanon.”

“There are external, international, and internal initiatives to resolve the presidential crisis, but no progress has been made at this level because the confrontational parties have thwarted them,” Kaouk declared, accusing the sovereignist camp of rejecting any solution because they seek “confrontation” and “want to lead the country into discord.”

According to Kaouk, whose camp continues to block the presidential election, the Lebanese people must choose between two paths: either agreement (according to Hezbollah’s terms, Editor’s note) to save the country, or rejecting dialogue and agreement, which leads the country towards confrontation.

Speaking at a funeral ceremony in Aita el-Chaab, south of Lebanon, Kaouk asserted that there is a foreign veto on agreement in Lebanon, “which is clear in the American stance.” He argued that this prevents the Lebanese from coming together and engaging in dialogue. He cited an incident in October 2022 when a dinner hosted by the Swiss embassy, attended by representatives from major Lebanese political parties and blocs, was canceled “because the United States opposed it.”

He concluded that “the group adopting a defiant and confrontational attitude has become a burden to the country because it is the cause of all crises and rejects the solution.”
