Despite the seriousness of Lebanon’s new migration crisis, the Council of Ministers meeting devoted to addressing the Syrian refugees’ issue and scheduled for 11 AM on Monday has failed to take place for lack of a quorum.

However, the session was replaced by an invitation from caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati to a meeting in his office, attended by the present ministers as well as the heads of the security services.

Since August, illegal crossings at the Lebanese-Syrian border have been witnessing a surge in activity, thus signaling a new migration movement towards Lebanon.

In a country where the Syrian presence weighs heavily and where the crisis keeps degenerating to the worse since 2020, this new wave of illegal migration is likely, according to some observers, to lead to security incidents and a rise in tensions on Lebanese territory.
