Between Sunday night and Monday morning, vandals broke into St. Georges Church in Jiyeh, south of Beirut, and destroyed statues and other church possessions.

According to local sources, the purpose of the break-in was to steal the contents of the donation box. Security forces arrived at the scene and launched an immediate investigation.

MP Bilal Abdallah of the Progressive Socialist Party (PSP) condemned the act on his X account, saying it was a “cowardly act” and that Jiyeh “will remain an oasis of peace and coexistence and will not be impacted by the absurd hands that desecrated its church.”

Jiyeh’s municipality denounced the incident in a statement, stressing that all the “spiritual families in Jiyeh condemn this act and abide by the preservation of unity and coexistence in all its diversity.”
