In an interview with London-based Saudi daily Asharq al-Awsat, Kataeb party vice-president Selim Sayegh, MP for Kesrouan, stressed that the French presidential emissary, former minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, should work to “convince Hezbollah that it cannot continue to impose its political diktat”.

“Only then can we move on to the phase of electing the President of the Republic, on the basis of a list of centrist candidates approved by all parties”, said MP Sayegh.

The Kataeb MP also said that the various opposition factions believe that “any dialogue with Hezbollah before the presidential election is inappropriate, since to discuss the election of the president directly with Hezbollah under the current conditions would be equivalent to to making all parties assume responsibility for the presidential vacuum, which would mean placing the victim and the executioner on an equal footing”.
