Abdallah Darwish was elected president of the Beirut Municipal Council on Friday, succeeding Jamal Itani who announced his resignation on July 28.

The election took place during a meeting chaired by the vice-president of the municipal council Elie Andrea, in the presence of the governor of Beirut Marwan Abboud.

Darwish thanked the members of the municipal council for their trust, emphasizing that he will work “determinedly to live up to their trust and that of the residents of Beirut.”

He highlighted that “the difficult conditions that Lebanon is going through due to financial and economic collapse have had very negative repercussions on the municipality and its ability to meet all the city’s needs at various levels.”

“Therefore, we will set priorities and work to implement them, using all available capacities, in collaboration with the vice-president and members of the municipality, as well as Governor Marwan Abboud,” he added.

In conclusion, he called on officials, civil society, and international organizations that can offer assistance “to cooperate in order to help our capital Beirut overcome this challenging phase and enhance the lives of its residents.”
