In a statement to This is Beirut, Ashraf Rifi, a Sunni MP from Tripoli and one of the leading figures of the Sovereignist Front, criticized the excesses of the Hezbollah militia, whose illegal weapons are out of control.

“The resistance (Hezbollah militia) went off the rails at the Kahale bend”, he declared shortly before Thursday’s meeting of the Sovereignist Front, held at the headquarters of the National Liberal Party in Achrafieh.

He also drew a link between the Kahale affair and the latest clashes in the Palestinian camp of Ain el-Helweh, on the outskirts of Saida in southern Lebanon, and the assassination earlier this month in Ain Ebel of Elias Hasrouni, a Lebanese Forces official in the caza of Bint Jbeil. “This link lies in the fact that a Lebanese faction possesses a military arsenal with a regional scope that escapes all control and is not subject to any law or legal authority”, hammered Achraf Rifi.
