US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller stated that the Doha meeting on Lebanon (which included Saudi Arabia, Egypt, France, and Qatar) underscored the five States’ commitment to Lebanon’s sovereignty and independence.

“We noted with concern, however, that nearly nine months after the end of the president’s term, Lebanon’s political leaders have yet to elect a successor.  We also underscore the desperate need for judicial reform and implementation of the rule of law, especially regarding the 2020 Port of Beirut explosion investigation,” he explained.

Miller was also asked if the US supports the election of the Lebanese Armed Forces Commander as president, to which he answered, “We do not take positions on elections.”
