Representatives from Egypt, France, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the US gathered on Monday in Doha to discuss the urgent need for Lebanese leadership to expedite presidential elections and implement necessary economic reforms to fulfill their responsibilities toward their citizens.

In a statement, the quintet group emphasized that “saving the Lebanese economy and securing a more prosperous future for the Lebanese people relies on the actions of the Lebanese leadership.”

While reaffirming their commitment to Lebanon’s sovereignty and independence, the group noted with concern that nearly nine months have passed since the end of former head of State Michel Aoun’s term without political leaders in Lebanon electing his successor.

The participants stressed the paramount importance of Lebanese parliament members fulfilling their constitutional responsibility and proceeding with the election of a new president. They also discussed specific measures to implement against those obstructing progress in this area.

The statement further clarified that meeting the aspirations and urgent needs of the Lebanese people requires the election of a president who embodies integrity, unifies the nation, prioritizes the country’s interests, and forms a comprehensive coalition to implement essential economic reforms, particularly those recommended by the International Monetary Fund.

In this context, the quintet group affirmed its readiness to work with Lebanon in supporting the implementation of these reform measures, which are indispensable for the country’s prosperity, stability, and security in the future.

On another note, they emphasized the urgent need for judicial reform and the application of the law, especially concerning the investigation into the 2020 Beirut port explosion. The leaders urged the Lebanese parties and stakeholders to take immediate actions to overcome the current political deadlock.

Furthermore, the participants underscored the importance of the Lebanese government’s implementation of United Nations Security Council resolutions, relevant international agreements, and decisions issued by the Arab League, in addition to adhering to the National Accord Document, which guarantees national unity and civil justice in Lebanon.

The statement concluded by stating that the Arab Republic of Egypt, the French Republic, the State of Qatar, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the United States of America continue their unwavering support for Lebanon and look forward to maintaining coordination in the best interest of the Lebanese people.
