A cautious calm reigns on Saturday along the southern border in the Shebaa area.

Earlier this morning, the Israeli army threw smoke grenades at a group consisting of MP Qassem Hashem and journalists from Al-Jadeed TV station in the Shebaa farms, near the Blue Line, while the MP was touring the area with the journalists. The bombs were launched as he was giving a speech, and everyone suffocated from the smoke.

Units of the Lebanese army and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) were immediately deployed in the area and continued to patrol along the southern border during the day.

The Israeli army confirmed that it had thrown smoke bombs to “disperse demonstrators who had crossed the Blue Line from Lebanon.”

For its part, UNIFIL called for restraint.
