The Constitutional Council held its first session on Thursday, May 18, to discuss the appeals filed against the legislation permitting the extension of the municipal and moukhtars councils in Lebanon, well-informed sources said.
These sources further revealed that the council is currently in the early stages of its deliberations and that the three appeals have been merged into one. Several Lebanese political factions, notably the Lebanese Forces, as well as several other independent MPs, presented appeals opposing the extension of the municipal council terms.
No decision is expected to be issued today.
Meanwhile, the council has suspended the implementation of the Public Procurement Law, and tasked a team with examining the appeal presented against it. MP Fouad Makhzoumi, among other independent MPs, lodged an appeal against this law on May 10.
