Free Patriotic Movement Leader Gebran Bassil backpedaled on former minister Jihad Azour after agreeing with the opposition on nominating him for the presidency, MP Ashraf Rifi said on Wednesday, May 18, on Al Mashhad platform.

“The opposition will neither accept nor facilitate the election of a president who is unable to rescue the country and is imposed by Hezbollah,” he stressed, as he noted that he currently supports the election of Army Chief Joseph Aoun.

“If Lebanese Forces Leader Samir Geagea decides to conclude a new Maarab agreement with Bassil to prevent Sleiman Frangieh from being elected as president, it would be a major crime against the Lebanese people, and I doubt that he would do that,” Rifi said in the interview.

He also added that he cautiously supports Saudi Arabia’s reconciliation with Syria, as he bets on “Damascus’ non-compliance with its commitments.”
