Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri emphasized the need to elect a president no later than June 15. Berri stressed the necessity of holding the elections, because “dwelling on the presidential vacuum, no one knows where the country is headed.”

He also declared his refusal to appoint a new Central Bank Governor before a head of state is elected, in order to avoid another vacancy at the helm of the Central Bank.

Lebanon has been without a president since October 31 due to Amal and Hezbollah’s boycott of the electoral sessions. Several initiatives are currently underway to attempt to reach a consensus on a new president, trying at the very least to unite opposition forces around one candidate in the face of the Mumanaa Axis.
