The Kataëb party underscored Tuesday the importance of resolving the Syrian refugee crisis in the wake of Damascus’ readmission into the Arab League, stating that Lebanon “bears the largest weight”. In a statement issued by its political bureau after a meeting chaired by party leader Samy Gemayel, the Kataëb stated that unresolved files between the two countries hinder the normalization of syro-Lebanese relations.

According to the statement, the disputes that these two countries should resolve are: the maritime border delineation, the fate of the abducted Lebanese in Syrian prisons, and the arrest warrants issued by the two countries against each other’s citizens.

The party welcomed the Constitutional Council’s recent decision to suspend the law extending municipal councils’ term. It considered that the CC “has a historical opportunity to prove its independence from political pressure”.
