Six people were killed and fifteen others wounded, two of them seriously, in the Israeli raid carried out shortly before 3pm on Tuesday on Ghobeiri, in the southern suburb of Beirut, according to an initial assessment by the Lebanese Ministry of Health.

It was still unclear an hour after the strike who was the “senior Hezbollah official” targeted in the apartment building, whose top two floors had collapsed, while Israeli army radio, quoted by pan-Arab media, indicated that it was uncertain whether the strike had achieved its objectives.

The Israeli army had previously indicated that the target was a “senior Hezbollah official in charge of the group’s ‘missile unit’”.

According to Reuters, quoting two Lebanese security sources, the attack targeted Ibrahim Kobayssi, reportedly the commander of Hezbollah’s missile unit.

Earlier, al-Hadath TV quoted “Israeli reports”, as saying that the target was Talal Hamiyeh, one of the commanders of Hezbollah elite force, al-Radwane , who was appointed following the assassination of Ibrahim Aqil, killed on Friday in an Israeli raid on Beirut’s southern suburbs. However, the  Israeli army radio denied the reports.

Hezbollah neither confirmed nor denied this information.

The raid was immediately confirmed by the Israeli army, which described it as a “targeted strike” and said that further details would be provided later.
