The union of Alfa and Touch employees, the two mobile operators in Lebanon, issued an ultimatum Monday evening to the Ministry of Telecommunications, giving it until Tuesday to meet its demands for the readjustment of the real value of employees’ salaries, failing which they will observe a work stoppage.

The action could significantly affect cell phone services in the country.

According to union representatives and following a series of meetings and consultations with the management of Alfa and Touch last week, a meeting was to be held earlier this week with caretaker Minister of Telecommunications, Johnny Corm. However, they learned that it has been postponed until May 24, the date of salary payment, making it impossible to implement what would have been agreed upon.

The union hopes that “the fair and urgent demands of employees will receive a clear response tomorrow Tuesday, otherwise they will be forced to start a strike,” it said in a statement.

The union had already threatened to strike on April 27
