Political circles close to Hezbollah claim that a ceasefire in Gaza would only be followed in southern Lebanon on the armed group’s terms.

It would refuse a shaky compromise, and would not commit to a ceasefire on the Lebanese front without knowing Hamas’ position on the truce agreement currently being negotiated. The pro-Iranian militia considers that it has paid a heavy price after Israel inflicted human and material losses. It would not implement Resolution 1701 until Lebanon obtains point B1 and the 13 border points in dispute, as well as Lebanese sovereignty over the Shebaa Farms.

The same circles claim that Hezbollah has lost more than 250 fighters, thousands of homes have been destroyed or partially damaged, and 100,000 Lebanese, notably Amal-Hezbollah supporters, have been displaced by the fighting initiated by the armed group since October 8.

According to information obtained by This is Beirut, Hezbollah would not abandon the front before the liberation of Lebanese lands “occupied” by Israel and before obtaining an international guarantee of Israel’s commitment not to violate Resolution 1701 by land, sea and air. The pro-Iranian group would also like to make political gains in the presidential elections, as well as in sensitive government posts.
