The U.S. Embassy Baghdad issued a security alert on Monday warning of continued threats against American citizens and interests in Iraq, citing ongoing plans by Iran-aligned armed groups to carry out attacks.

The U.S. embassy said that “terrorist militias allied with Iran” are continuing to plan attacks targeting U.S. nationals and U.S.-associated sites across Iraq, including in the Kurdistan Region.

The alert also raised concerns about alleged support networks, stating that “some entities linked to the Iraqi government” are providing political, financial, and operational cover to these groups, an accusation likely to add further strain to already complex relations between Washington and Baghdad.

While Iraqi airspace has recently reopened and limited commercial flights have resumed, the embassy warned that significant risks persist. It said travelers should remain aware of the ongoing threat posed by rockets, drones, and projectiles in Iraqi airspace.

The statement reiterated the U.S. State Department’s Level 4 travel advisory for Iraq, the highest level, urging American citizens not to travel to the country “for any reason” and calling on those currently in Iraq to leave immediately.

The warning underscores ongoing instability in Iraq, where tensions involving Iran-backed militias and U.S. interests have persisted amid broader regional escalation.
