A senior U.S. official confirmed to This is Beirut that “next week’s talks in Washington will be a critical moment for the Lebanese government to assert control, take responsibility, and move toward the disarmament of Hezbollah,” refering to upcoming direct, civilian negotiations between Israel and Lebanon.
The official appeared to link the ongoing crisis in Lebanon with the broader U.S.-Iran ceasefire deal, telling This is Beirut that “the administration is closely monitoring rising tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, warning that the situation could jeopardize the already fragile ceasefire framework involving Iran.”
They then underscored the importance of Lebanese action on Hezbollah disarmament saying, “without meaningful action, the risk of a broader regional conflict will continue to grow.”
“If such a conflict emerges,” the official told This Is Beirut, “the United States will stand firmly with Israel and ensure it has the support necessary to defend itself.”
The official also added that “restoring stability remains a top priority, including urgent efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and safeguard global energy flows.”
