Clashes erupted Sunday in the southern Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp following the assassination of a man known as “Imad al-Sarii.” He was a bodyguard for the brother of senior Fatah figure Munir al-Maqdah and was reportedly killed by an Islamist militant, a military source told This is Beirut.

The assailant is suspected to be linked to Islamist circles close to “Abou Hamzeh Mansour,” according to the source.

Located near Sidon, Ain al-Hilweh is Lebanon’s largest Palestinian refugee camp and has long been a flashpoint for politically motivated violence, hosting rival groups including Fatah and various Islamist militants, with limited control by the Lebanese state.

Since the outbreak of the 2026 Israel-Hezbollah war, security conditions in and around the camp have further deteriorated amid heightened tensions, the spread of weapons, and fears that the conflict could spill over internally, exacerbating already fragile stability.
