Israel on Friday struck a key Iranian naval weapons facility, escalating Middle East tensions as the United States weighs a major troop buildup in the region.
The Israeli military announced that it has carried out a major airstrike targeting what it described as Iran’s most central facility for the production of naval missiles and sea mines, located in the city of Yazd. According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the strike was conducted by the Israeli Air Force with intelligence guidance from military intelligence and the Israeli Navy’s intelligence division.
The targeted site was reportedly used for the planning, development, assembly, and storage of advanced weapons systems, including missiles designed to be launched from naval platforms such as submarines, helicopters, and cruise vessels. These systems were intended to strike both mobile and stationary maritime targets.
The IDF stated that the facility plays a critical role in Iran’s naval armament efforts, serving as a primary hub for the development of most of the country’s naval missiles and sea mines.
The strike follows earlier operations that reportedly eliminated senior leadership within Iran’s Revolutionary Guard naval forces. Israeli officials described the latest attack as a significant blow to Iran’s naval production capabilities.
Washington to Send up to 10,000 Troops
Meanwhile, the United States is preparing for a potential military buildup in the region. The Pentagon is reportedly considering sending up to 10,000 additional ground troops to the Middle East, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, citing Department of Defense officials with knowledge of the planning.
The reinforcements, expected to include infantry units and armored vehicles, would join approximately 5,000 Marines and thousands of paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division already deployed or en route to the region.
While officials have not disclosed specific deployment locations, sources indicate the forces will likely be positioned within operational range of Iran, including near Kharg Island, a key oil export hub.
The move comes as President Donald Trump weighs the possibility of renewed negotiations with Tehran while simultaneously emphasizing military readiness. Trump has repeatedly stated his intention to ensure freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, with or without allied support.
“All announcements regarding troop deployments will come from the Department of War. As we have said, President Trump always has all military options at his disposal,” said Anna Kelly, deputy White House press secretary.
A spokesperson for U.S. Central Command declined to comment on the potential deployment, underscoring the sensitivity of ongoing military planning.
The overlapping developments underscore a volatile moment in the region, where military pressure, strategic positioning, and diplomatic efforts are all unfolding simultaneously, leaving the trajectory of the conflict uncertain.
