The United States and Israel are reportedly working on a plan for the period following the war in Iran, aimed at creating conditions that could eventually lead to political change in Tehran, according to Israeli media reports citing informed sources.
According to a report published by the Israeli newspaper Israel Hayom, officials in Washington and Tel Aviv are discussing a framework designed to support the Iranian population should a domestic movement emerge to replace the country’s leadership after the conflict.
A source familiar with the discussions said the strategy would focus on facilitating internal political change led by Iranians themselves, rather than imposing a leadership transition through foreign military intervention.
The report said the plan includes public elements intended to provide immediate support to the Iranian population if protests or political mobilization take place following the war, though details of the operational aspects were not disclosed.
Change Expected to Come From Within
According to the sources cited in the report, the envisioned scenario relies primarily on internal pressure within Iranian society rather than direct action by U.S. or Israeli forces.
Officials involved in the discussions reportedly believe that any future leadership in Iran should emerge from mainstream elements of Iranian society, rather than from ethnic minority groups such as Kurds or Azeris.
The report suggested that policymakers in Washington and Tel Aviv see the Iranian public as the central actor in any potential political transformation following the war.
Leaders Signal Similar Messaging
Public statements from U.S. and Israeli leaders have echoed similar themes during the conflict.
On the first day of the war, U.S. President Donald Trump urged Iranian civilians to remain indoors during the initial phase of military operations, saying the streets would be unsafe due to the scale of the strikes.
“Take shelter in your homes. Stay inside. Outside is very dangerous,” Trump said at the time, adding that Iranians would eventually be able to “take control of their government.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also suggested that political change in Iran would ultimately depend on the actions of the Iranian people themselves.
“The moment of truth is approaching,” Netanyahu said in remarks addressed to Iranians. “We do not seek to divide Iran but to free it from tyranny.”
Uncertain Timeline
Despite the reported planning, Israeli officials acknowledge that no guarantee exists that the war will lead to the collapse of Iran’s government.
Sources familiar with the discussions said any major political shift in Iran could occur weeks or even months after the fighting ends, rather than immediately following military operations.
At the same time, officials cited in the report said the military campaign itself may conclude sooner than originally expected.
Early assessments from U.S. officials suggested the war could last four to five weeks, but more recent estimates indicate the United States and Israel may halt their strikes earlier if their military objectives are achieved.
For now, the reported post-war planning reflects growing efforts in Washington and Tel Aviv to prepare for possible political outcomes in Iran once the military phase of the conflict concludes.
