The United States has a new one-way attack drone unit, built by reverse-engineering Iran’s Shahed-136 drones, ready to strike Iran if President Donald Trump orders military action, Bloomberg reports.
According to the report, the unit, named Task Force Scorpion, emerged from an experimental U.S. military program and is now fully integrated into U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees American operations in the Middle East.
Captain Tim Hawkins is quoted by Bloomberg saying: “We established this squadron last year to rapidly provide our combat forces with new drone combat capabilities.” The report also notes that this unit is part of the largest U.S. military deployment in the Middle East in over twenty years.
These U.S. drones were developed through reverse-engineering of the Shahed-136, used by Iran and Russia, including in Ukraine, according to the report. The drones, called LUCAS (Low-Cost Unmanned Combat Attack System), are produced by the Arizona-based company SpektreWorks, with an estimated unit cost of around $35,000, according to CENTCOM data cited by Bloomberg.
The outlet notes that these drones can be used for one-way strikes, reconnaissance missions, or maritime attacks, and are capable of autonomous long-range operations.
According to the report, these drones are not suitable for destroying heavily fortified infrastructure due to their limited payload (about 18 kg) but could be effective against “soft” targets such as missile production sites, road networks, or dispersed launch ramps.
