In an exclusive statement given to This is Beirut, a senior official in the White House elaborated on their transfer of troops from al-Tanf in Syria to Jordan.

The official said, “the redeployment of U.S. troops from the al-Tanf position in Syria to Jordan was carried out following a comprehensive operational reassessment.”

“The al-Tanf site was handed over through coordinated arrangements between Syrian authorities and Kurdish partners to prevent any immediate security vacuum or campaign against ISIS continues,” they added, “and we are maintaining targeting, surveillance, and disruption capabilities against extremist networks across the region.”

“This new positioning enhances our force protection and rapid response options and is related to the activities of Iran and affiliated groups,” the official explained. “The adjustment in the posture of U.S. forces is focused on resilience and deterrence and is not an indication of a broader conflict breaking out. The repositioning is intended to better balance the ISIS threat with the risks associated with Iran.
