Pope Leo XIV revealed on Tuesday, during a press conference aboard the plane returning him to Rome after his visit to Beirut, that “the Church has put forward a proposal” calling on Hezbollah to “abandon its weapons and prioritize dialogue.” He said he had been informed of a message sent by the Shiite movement during his stay in Lebanon.
The pontiff emphasized his determination to “continue efforts to persuade the various Lebanese parties to renounce weapons and violence, and to engage in constructive dialogue that serves the interests of Lebanon and its people.”
Speaking to reporters, he added that “seeking solutions based on dialogue rather than violence is the most effective way to serve the Lebanese people and ensure stability.”
The pope also noted that “the political meetings held during the visit took place away from the media and focused mainly on easing internal and regional tensions.”
