The Youth Association for Social Awareness (YASA) called on Tuesday on the Beirut Port Authority to urgently reassess general safety conditions inside the Port of Beirut, following a serious traffic accident that took place on October 6.
In a statement, YASA said a “horrific and very serious” crash occurred inside the port when a car was crushed under a trailer, leaving the driver in critical condition in intensive care.
The association noted that while the maximum speed limit within the port is 25 km/h, “speed limits alone are not enough if safety and organization are lacking.”
“Even if the driver was at fault, the highest safety standards must still be applied within the port,” the statement continued, emphasizing the need for clear lanes, proper lighting, signage and better organization.
“Accidents cannot be justified by mutual negligence,” YASA warned, urging authorities to take immediate preventive action.
YASA concluded its statement by wishing the injured driver a speedy recovery, adding, “every second can mean the difference between life and death.”
