Lebanon’s top defense and security officials conducted an inspection of Arida and Abboudieh border crossings in northern Lebanon on Tuesday to review the organizational, administrative, and security measures in place for the departure of displaced Syrians returning to their country.

Defense Minister Michel Menassa, accompanied by Interior Minister Ahmad Hajjar, Public Works and Transport Minister Fayez Rasamny, and Director General of General Security Hassan Choucair, toured the facilities at the border crossings.

During the visit, Menassa received briefings from officers responsible for operational management and observed the full process, from the registration of names to the actual border crossing. He stressed the importance of facilitating procedures without compromising legal and security standards, while respecting humanitarian considerations.

The defense minister also highlighted the need for ongoing coordination between the army, security agencies, and relevant administrative bodies to ensure the smooth execution of the process and the orderly return of displaced persons.

The defense minister also noted that his tour was part of a direct follow-up on the issue, aimed at identifying needs and addressing obstacles to ensure the proper implementation of government decisions.

Kelly T. Clements, Deputy High Commissioner for Refugees at the UNHCR, announced on Tuesday that nearly 200,000 displaced Syrians have left Lebanon to return to their homeland since the beginning of 2025.
