The United States has voiced deep concern over ongoing tensions along Lebanon’s southern border that endanger civilian safety and increase the risk of a wider conflict.

In remarks to the press, US State Department regional spokesperson Michael Mitchell said, “We condemn Hezbollah’s escalation and call for restraint. These actions put civilians at risk and threaten to drag the region into a major confrontation,” while reaffirming “Washington’s support for Lebanon’s sovereignty and stability.”

Mitchell welcomed the Lebanese government’s recent decision to begin implementing the ceasefire agreement signed in November 2024, as well as its commitment to U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701 and the Taif Agreement — calling it “a historic, courageous and correct step” toward the principle of “one army, for one people, in one nation.”

He stressed that these measures “provide a concrete basis for the complete disarmament of Hezbollah,” adding that tangible actions in this regard are essential to avoid another war in the region.

The spokesperson concluded by affirming that Washington will continue coordinating with regional and international partners to support these efforts, promoting calm and preventing any further deterioration of the security situation in southern Lebanon.
