The Lebanese government’s announcement of a national plan to restrict weapons possession exclusively to state security forces has received strong international endorsement, with Arab and European officials supporting the move.

Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit welcomed the decision, stating that the monopoly of arms by the state is “a fundamental principle of sovereignty that cannot be ignored or violated under any pretext.” He called for full cooperation with the Lebanese Army, which has been tasked with implementing the plan, and urged all political factions to support the process.

Aboul Gheit also stressed the importance of regional context, calling on the international community to pressure Israel to end its occupation of Lebanese territory and to halt strikes within Lebanese borders. “The full implementation of the ceasefire agreement reached last November remains the only path to restoring peace across Lebanon,” he said.

The United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Lebanon Hamish Cowell also described the move as a “historic decision” and reiterated the UK’s support for the Lebanese government and its military institutions.

Spain’s Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares held a phone call with Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Rajji, during which he praised the Lebanese government’s commitment to extending state authority. Albares also confirmed Spain’s readiness to assist to the Lebanese Army based on their operational needs.
