A Lebanese customs patrol intercepted a significant quantity of smuggled rotten chicken, estimated at 500 kilograms, near the border town of Al-Qaa, authorities reported on Tuesday.
The contraband poultry, believed to have been transported from Syria via motorcycles, entered Lebanese territory without meeting any health or refrigeration standards. According to customs officials, the spoiled meat was intended for distribution in local markets.
The shipment was seized outside the town’s perimeter and immediately destroyed in the presence of customs authorities and representatives from the Al-Qaa municipality.
The mayor of Al-Qaa, attorney Bashir Matar, issued a strong warning to residents, urging them to avoid purchasing smuggled meat of unknown origin. “All chicken shops in Al-Qaa are committed to selling safe, non-rotten poultry from reliable and regulated Lebanese sources,” he affirmed.
Matar concluded with a call for vigilance, “Your safety is our responsibility, so always ask about the source.”
