President Joseph Aoun began an official visit to Iraq on Sunday, at the invitation of Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid, as part of efforts to strengthen strategic relations between the two countries. During a summit held at the Presidential Palace in Baghdad, both leaders reaffirmed the historical and fraternal ties uniting Lebanon and Iraq. The visit was marked by the announcement of a $20 million financial aid package from Iraq to support Lebanon’s reconstruction efforts.
Financial and Political Support
President Abdul Latif Rashid expressed his satisfaction with recent developments in Lebanon, emphasizing Iraq’s commitment to standing by the Lebanese people in all fields. Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani confirmed the $20 million donation, calling for the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
Joseph Aoun: “Lebanon Will Not Forget Iraq’s Support”
In his remarks, President Aoun emphasized the deep and enduring friendship between Lebanon and Iraq, thanking the Iraqi government and people for their continued support, especially during times of war and energy crises. He highlighted the Iraqi oil shipments and the welcoming of displaced Lebanese as acts of genuine Arab solidarity.
“Lebanon will never forget Iraq’s valuable assistance, particularly during the last war. Your generosity has brought relief and helped sustain hope,” Aoun said.
Security Cooperation and Shared Position on Gaza
On regional matters, the two presidents addressed shared security challenges, particularly the fight against terrorism, and stressed the importance of enhanced intelligence cooperation between Lebanese and Iraqi security agencies.
They also condemned ongoing Israeli violations of Lebanese territory and called for immediate international action in response to the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
“What’s happening in Gaza is unacceptable. The international community’s silence in the face of civilian suffering is a moral failure,” said Aoun.
Toward a Modern Arab Cooperation Framework
President Aoun also advocated for the creation of a modern Arab cooperation system, based on mutual interests, national sovereignty, and economic integration. He reiterated his proposal for the establishment of a common Arab economic market, starting with bilateral agreements that could gradually expand.
A Symbolic and Strategic Visit
After his meeting with President Rashid, Aoun proceeded to the Iraqi Prime Minister’s office for further discussions with Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani.
Before departing Baghdad, President Aoun extended a formal invitation to President Rashid to visit Beirut, reaffirming Lebanon’s desire to strengthen its partnership with Iraq in the face of common regional challenges.
