In the build-up to the final phase of the municipal and mukhtar elections scheduled to take place in southern Lebanon on Saturday, May 24, Interior Minister Ahmad Hajjar embarked on an inspection tour of the southern part of the country on Tuesday morning.

“We are anticipating any attempt to disrupt the vote,” he declared from the Saida Serail, where he chaired a meeting of the security sub-council. In this context, he reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring the smooth running of the process, despite the potential risks.

“We are taking into account any irregularities or violations that may occur, but the decision is clear: the electoral process will take place on schedule and in compliance with the law,” he stressed.

The meeting was attended by the Mohafez of the South, Mansour Daou, as well as representatives of the security forces, the army, and the judiciary. They reviewed the logistical preparations and security measures to prevent any disruption. The meeting also provided an opportunity to coordinate the efforts of the various institutions to ensure a stable climate on voting day.

Minister Hajjar then headed to Nabatiyeh, where he emphasized the electoral event’s symbolic and political importance. “Holding the elections is the strongest message we can send to the population: that of a return to the reconstruction of the South (devastated by the war that has pitted Hezbollah against Israel since October 2023), both in material and human terms,” he stressed.

In this context, he pointed out that “diplomatic discussions have been initiated with the parties involved to avoid any Israeli attack on polling day.” “We hope that these steps will be respected,” he continued.

He also reassured the public, stating that “the level of preparation is now confirmed: everything is ready to guarantee that the elections will be held next Saturday in optimal security conditions.”

The May 24 elections will mark the final stage of the municipal and mukhtar elections that have been taking place across the country since the beginning of the month.
