Ankara called on Friday for a ceasefire “as soon as possible” in Ukraine at the opening of Turkish-mediated talks in Istanbul between Kyiv and Moscow—the first such talks since the spring of 2022.
“It is of crucial importance that a ceasefire be implemented as soon as possible,” said Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, stressing that “every day of delay leads to further loss of life.”
The Turkish foreign minister also emphasized that it is “very important” for these talks to “lay the groundwork” for a meeting between the Russian and Ukrainian presidents.
The Ukrainian delegation, led by Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, is expected to negotiate the terms for a direct meeting between President Volodymyr Zelensky and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin at Dolmabahçe Palace, a Ukrainian diplomatic source told AFP on Friday.
