Central Bank Governor Karim Souhaid took part in a session of the subcommittee of the parliamentary Finance and Budget Committee on Wednesday, where deliberations centered on the government’s proposed bank restructuring law.

The meeting was held in the presence of Committee Chairman MP Ibrahim Kanaan, Minister of Finance Yassine Jaber and other committee members.

Described as “constructive,” the discussions will resume at a date to be determined by the committee’s chair.

In a statement issued following the session, the Central Bank (BDL) emphasized that the legislation currently under review, along with any similar financial reform laws, is ultimately the responsibility of the government and requires parliamentary approval.

The statement also reaffirmed that, in accordance with Articles 71 and 72 of the Code of Money and Credit, the BDL’s role is strictly advisory. The Central Bank provides technical input to enhance the effectiveness of proposed legislation and ensure alignment with the existing banking legal framework.
