Tensions flared along the Lebanese-Syrian border near Hermel on April 24 after gunfire erupted between armed individuals and Syrian forces, reportedly triggered by disputes over smuggling activities.

According to a Lebanese Army post on its X account, shots were first fired from the Lebanese side toward Syrian territory, prompting a swift response from the Syrian side. The cross-border exchange resulted in injuries on both sides.

In response, Lebanese Army units deployed to the area and imposed exceptional security measures aimed at restoring stability and preventing further escalation. Raids were carried out, and surveillance and tracking operations were launched by the Intelligence Directorate to identify those responsible for the gunfire.

The crackdown led to the arrest of a suspect identified as A.A., who is believed to be involved in the shooting incident and affiliated with an armed group known for its smuggling activities along the border.

Simultaneously, the Lebanese Army Command initiated urgent communications with Syrian authorities to contain the situation and prevent further deterioration. These efforts proved effective in de-escalating tensions between the two sides.

Meanwhile, Lebanese military units continue to enforce strict security protocols in the region and are actively pursuing additional suspects linked to the incident.
