In a statement during a university workshop in Tyre on Wednesday, the commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) West Sector, Nicola Mandolesi, emphasized the critical role of UNIFIL's presence “in maintaining peace and stability” in Lebanon. He noted that “cooperation with local communities and the Lebanese Armed Forces are essential for the success of the peace process.”
Speaking on the 47th anniversary of UNIFIL’s establishment, General Mandolesi underscored the importance of continuous cooperation in building trust and fostering peace. “Dialogue with local communities is a fundamental pillar of the peacekeeping mission in Lebanon and symbolizes the international presence,” he stated.
Mandolesi also addressed the young participants, reminding them, “You are the present and future of society.” He highlighted the mission's key priorities, including monitoring the ceasefire, supporting the Lebanese Armed Forces and providing assistance to local populations in need.
The speech coincided with a tense incident earlier in the day, when a peacekeeper was injured after a landmine exploded in the region's west sector, near the valley connecting Yater to Zebqine in South Lebanon. The soldier is Finnish, and his injuries are severe.
