The Israeli military will remain “indefinitely” in the recently occupied parts of Mount Hermon in Syria, announced Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz on Tuesday.
Katz said that Israel’s security “will not be dependent on others for our defense – whether here or in any other place.”
Ahmad al-Sharaa, the head of Syria’s new government, previously said that he does not intend to threaten Israel, whilst condemning its continued occupation of regions in southern Syria.
He also stated his willingness to abide by the 1974 Seperation of Forces Agreement, which established a truce between Syria and Israel over the occupied Golan Heights, although Israel announced that the agreement is “void until security is reestablished” in Syria.
