Wounded in southern Lebanon, Christina Assi, the young AFP journalist-photographer, is one of the 100 female personalities of the year, according to a BBC ranking unveiled on Tuesday.
Divided into five categories: climate, culture and education, entertainment and sport, politics, science, and health and tech, the ranking celebrates those who, “thanks to their resilience, drive change,” explains the British media.
Photographer Christina Assi, whose right leg was amputated as a result of an Israeli strike on October 13, 2023, while she was reporting from southern Lebanon, is singled out in the political category.
“This experience has led her to campaign for the safety of journalists and she has dedicated her participation in the Paris 2024 Olympic Torch Relay to all journalists who have died in the line of duty,” writes the BBC.
To have been selected “is an incredible honor, especially as a woman photographer in a field often dominated by men,” Assi reacted to AFP.
This distinction “is a tribute to all the courageous journalists who have been targeted simply for doing their job,” she added.
She also expressed the hope that “this recognition will highlight the importance of press freedom and the sacrifices made to achieve it.”
