The Bureau of the Lebanese parliament convened, on Monday at noon, to prepare for a legislative session and approve a number of urgent matters, most notably extending the mandate of Army Commander General Joseph Aoun and the heads of security apparatuses. The session was set for Thursday, November 28.
According to the Lebanese daily Nidaa Al Watan, “extending mandates is on track in the absence of a president and in light of the requirements of the current stage with regard to the implementation of UN resolution 1701.” The agenda consists of 17 items, including proposals for the mandate extension of the army commander and security agency chiefs.
It is worthy to note that the parliamentary bureau was supposed to convene early last week to prepare for the legislative session. However, the visit of US presidential envoy Amos Hochstein pre-occupied the Speaker of the Parliament.
