The European Council has approved a €15 million assistance package under the European Peace Facility (EPF) to support the Lebanese army.
The funding aims to strengthen the army’s capacities in military medical operations, engineering, and logistics, enhancing their ability to operate in a highly volatile regional security environment, according to a statement on Wednesday.
“This decision highlights that the EU-Lebanon partnership remains a priority on the EU’s agenda, especially amid the region’s unpredictable security situation,” the statement read.
The EPF, established in March 2021, is designed to finance actions under the EU's common foreign and security policy to prevent conflicts, preserve peace, and enhance global stability. It allows the EU to support the military and defense capabilities of partner countries, as well as regional and international organizations. A prior EPF measure allocated €6 million to Lebanon in 2022, marking ongoing EU support for Lebanon’s stability and security.
